It looks like Microsoft has very big plans for the Xbox 720 according to these suppposibly leaked documents from Scribd via The Verge. The documents are a presentation made by Microsoft in August 2010. The documents reveal that the new Xbox 720 will launch sometime in 2013 and will not be your average gaming console, but an all-in-one entertainment unit that Microsoft says "is the only box needed for living room entertainment".
The Xbox 720 will be packed with some impressive hardware. The leaked document confirms that Blu-ray will be included, allowing users to play full 1080p HD movies in both 2D and 3D. The internal hardware will also be beefed up, where Microsoft mention the the Xbox 720 will have "lightning start-up speeds". This could raise the possibility of a Solid State Drive (SSD) for internal storage. It is unclear whether Microsoft will use x86 or ARM cores in their new processor, this will be running alongside 3 PowerPC cores to allow backwards compatibility to run Xbox 360 titles.
Demonstrating 'Fortaleza' Kinect Glasses |
The most interesting item from Microsoft's documents is "Fortaleza", which is the project name for what appears to be 'Kinect Glasses'. The concept seems to be similar to Google's 'Project Glass', which will work over a Wi-Fi or 4G network and will give the user augmented reality. Though the 'Kinect Glasses' are expected to launch after the Xbox 720 in 2014.
It is quite possible that the leak is legitimate as the documents have since be removed at the request of an international law firm named Covington & Burling LLP which lists Microsoft as one of their clients.
